In this episode, Raghu & I talk about Mumbai which is surrounded by the sea but its residents rarely go out to the water.

Intro : When you look out at the open sea the only boats that meet the eye are fishing boats. The Kolis—the oldest inhabitants of Mumbai—are the people whose paths do not end where the waves begin. They net, clean and sell the fish that ends up on our thalis.

Fresh catch, traceable and sustainable catch from Mumbai’s traditional fishermen. I discuss growing up in a fishing family, the impact of commercial fishing and giving back to the community.

Intro : India’s coastline is over 7,500 kilometres (over 4,600 miles) long, and nearly a fifth of the country’s population – about 250 million people – live along the coast. From mineral resources to food, tourism and maritime trade, the Indian Ocean is a lifeline, and its assets are worth billions of dollars.

But now the government is looking at an ambitious coastal development project to build ports, dams and inland waterways. How will this impact coastal communities and marine life? Will it end up choking the oceans, or can India adopt the Blue Economy and sustainably develop its marine resources?

Intro : In the latest episode of Half-fry and Toast I catch up with a 7th generation fisherman from the Karanja village of Maharashtra. He anchored his boat - right where his passion belongs - fishing! From giving up a comfortable job in finance to coming back closer to his roots to understand the exploited fishing industry. We speak about his travels through the sea, the kind of local fresh catch that we can consume sustainably as well as what he aims to do with his own start-up Blucatch seafoods. We speak about the history of the Koli community and learn about amazing traditions the fishermen do, when sighting a good fish. With so much knowledge on the subject,
